After you have completed each unit, you can draw on the lessons and learning activities to complete the following Learning Log Entries:

Your Learning Log Entries should be approximately 250 words long and will be graded according to the following checklist:

Grading Criteria
Content: All parts of the writing prompt are addressed.
Organization: Response is organized, and ideas are adequately developed, clear, and have sufficient detail.
Paragraph structure: Paragraphs have a clear, central idea and ideas are linked. There is some attempt at managing cohesion.
Formatting: Page format, citations, and references are appropriate to style (APA, MLA, etc.)
Grammar: Some errors in grammar, punctuation, or vocabulary, yet does not detract from meaning.
Word Choice: Academic register and tone is developing, with some variation in word choice and sentence type.

📔 Unit 1 Learning Log:

Learning Log 1.1: Self-introduction and self-analysis of academic writing strengths and weaknesses 

Review the results of your diagnostic writing activity and reflections on your personal writing process; then, write a short reflection (up to 1 page double-spaced) on the following:

  • In what areas do you excel as a writer? What parts of the writing process do you enjoy?

  • What areas require improvement in your writing? What parts of the writing process do you struggle with?

Draw from specific examples in your diagnostic and past experiences with writing.

Learning Log 1.2: Email and Messaging Task

Write a sample email message to your SKLS 500 instructor explaining that you have a question about one of the assignments in the class. Include all the appropriate parts of a formal email: subject line, salutation, message, closing remark, sign off and your name.

📔 Unit 2 Learning Log:

Learning Log 2.1: Read and Reflect (Case Study)

Read the following case study that describes a fictional situation:

Maria has to write an essay about the dangers of overfishing. The professor informs the learners that they will need to use at least 3 references in their paper. Maria spends a lot of time researching and finding various resources (videos, journal articles, and websites). When it is time to write her paper, she only includes journal articles as references because she thinks that is all the professor wants to see. She includes some ideas from the videos she watched and even adds a couple sentences from a website that she thought sounded really good. A week after submitting her paper, her professor asks to speak to her in private.

Write in your learning log about the situation making sure to answer these questions:

  1. Why do you think Maria’s professor wants to speak to her?

  2. Do you think Maria knowingly or unknowingly made an error? Why?

  3. What should Maria have done differently? How can she solve this problem?

  4. What strategies will you use to help avoid Academic Dishonesty in your course assignments?

  5. Do you have any questions or concerns about Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism?

Learning Log 2.2: Reflection on Academic Integrity and Integrating Sources

After completing this unit, including the learning activities, use the following guiding questions to write your log entry:

  1. In your previous educational experiences, how important was Academic Honesty?

  2. When you used other’s words (or sources) in your writing, did you use a particular style? How will it be different for you in writing course papers now?

  3. What seems the most challenging or confusing about academic integrity and integrating sources?

  4. What strategies do you think you’ll use to cite, integrate sources, and references?

📔 Unit 3 Learning Log:

Learning Log 3.1: Analyze your own writing, then reflect.

First, find and read your most recent writing assignments. Analyze your paragraphs in terms of form: Do they have a clear topic sentence, supporting ideas, and concluding sentence? Next, consider whether paragraphing is organized and whether your writing flows, or it there some ‘choppiness.’ Finally, reflect on the following questions.

  1. Do you feel you are using good paragraph form and do all paragraphs in your writing include topic sentences?

  2. Do you use transition words and phrases in your writing? Why or why not?

  3. What are some strategies you could use to ensure your papers flow and paragraph development is cohesive? 

Learning Log 3.2: Self-Reflection

For this second Learning Log entry, you are asked to review papers you have written in your other graduate degree programs, or in your undergraduate program.

First, reflect on the similarities and difference between paper structure and the importance of a thesis or purpose statement, developing and following a structure to paragraphing, and the need for cohesion between paragraphs and within paragraphs.

Then, write 2 –4 questions you will ask yourself when you are writing or revising your academic papers.

Learning Log 4.1: Reflecting on the Research Process

Reflect on the research process, including defining your research question, developing search keywords for your research question, and refining your search results. Do you have any questions about any part of the process? Did you learn something new in the process which you can apply in your future research process?

Learning Log 4.2: Choosing Credible Sources

Reflect on choosing credible sources and the tips on how to read a journal article. Do you have any questions?

Learning Log Entry 5.2: Reflect on the features of Scholarly Writing

As you will be developing your scholarly writing, what aspects of style, mechanics, and tone will you need to focus on? What areas are a concern for you or you will need guidance/help with? How will you seek that help.

Learning Log 6.1: Discussion Board Posts

If you have already written a discussion board post, if not refer to the example in Activity 1.1, then evaluate it according to the tips discussed in this unit topic. Then, in 1 -2 paragraphs, write about:

  1. the process of writing/responding to a discussion board post (the steps).

  2. any information you already knew before this lesson and what was new for you.

  3. what you will be focusing on when you write your ‘next’ discussion board post.

Learning Log 6.2: Reflective Writing

For your learning log. In 250 words, reflect on what you’ve learned about writing reflective papers or personal responses. Make sure to include the following:

  • First summarize the main features of a reflective paper. Was anything new for you?

  • Then reflect on what you will need to remember or focus on when you write your next reflective writing assignment? What questions do you still have regarding reflective writing assignments?

Learning Log 6.3: Reflect on Writing Summary -Response Papers.

In this learning log reflect on writing a summary response paper and the process of writing it: Critical reading, writing a summary, and writing a response. When you do write a summary response for a class, what will be your process for writing? Pre-writing and drafting strategies?

Self-assess your annotation using the guidelines you have learned in this unit and complete a learning reflection by considering the guiding questions below:

This assignment will be due at the end of Unit 3. Check your syllabus for the exact due date.

Read the essay on “A Modern Prescription for Poetry.”

Unit 6 Genres: Discussions, Reflections, and Summary Responses

Note that for Units 6-8 your instructor will give specific instructions on which parts of the Assignments 3-6 to complete.

The Unit 6 assignment will assess your understanding of writing for discussions, reflections, and summary responses. Go to the assessment section in Moodle for details and be sure to check the instructions from your instructor.

Assignment 3.1: Discussion Board Post

  • Write a 150 word discussion board post about writing effective discussion board posts. Be sure to refer to the resources from the unit and ensure that you are following the steps discussed in this unit topic.
  • Post as a Forum Post.
  • Respond to another classmate’s post in 3 -5 sentences. Make sure that your response is relevant and unique. (Due by the end of the Week – Sunday Midnight).

Assignment 3.2: Reflective Writing Outline

  • First, think of a time in your personal or professional life in which you had to overcome a challenge or difficulty.
  • Create an outline for how you would write a reflective paper. Use full complete sentences as you would if you were writing the paper. Include the following information:
    • The challenge and what it taught you (the theme for your paper)
    • The topic of your assignment has shown me main theme.
    • Provide a brief description, in outline form, of your chosen struggle from a DIEP perspective.

Before you begin your assignment, take a moment to scroll through and read the different methods of creating an outline from Purdue OWL. In this assignment, you will be using the full sentence outline.

Assignment 3.3: Summary Response Paper

Read the sample Summary and Response paper. Evaluate the summary and response using the checklist provided. Is there anything you would change or do differently? Submit your answers in paragraph format, making sure to support your assertions with examples from the text.

In his essay, The Canadian Climate, McHayle (1970) writes about the different personalities of Canadian citizens regarding the climate, the warm and the cold Canadian. The warm Canadian is the positive person that shares in the pleasures of life in Canada with the new visitors. This type of Canadian encourages the emigrant to take part in the culture and winter activities, such as hockey, skiing, snowboarding, ice-fishing, and more. They will provide many details and enthusiastically discuss various Canadian activities. In addition, the warm Canadian likes to ask visitors about their own countries. They are eager to learn more about the country of the visitor and may ask questions pertaining to the geography and social and economic conditions. On the contrary the cool Canadians portrays a negative image of their country. It is like the reverse of the with warm Canadians because I believe that they make a bad ambassador. They encourage others to go back to their original country with the argument that Canada is unbearably cold. The author finishes by saying that these two extremes are not mutually exclusive as Canadians can choose their opinion depending on the moment. Also, the author says that the student needs to be ready for understand these mood swings with tolerance and respect.

Although the author presented two very distinct Canadian personality types, this has not reflected my experiences since arriving in Canada. The Canadians that I have met have never been just one or the other, but instead are usually a blend of the cool and warm Canadian. Although many Canadians that I have met have been very welcoming and encouraged me to participate in winter activities, they were also curious as to why I would leave the warm climate of my home country. I never felt that these things were said due to any ill-feelings towards their own country, which is what the author appears to imply. Additionally, I believe that these drastic categorizations can do severe harm as it limits the Canadian people. Just like anyone, people are complex and cannot be easily categorized into two simple subgroups. Although the author presents an interesting idea in their essay, I disagree with their thesis based on my lived experiences.

  • Read the article and find three aspects or concepts that are more relevant to your field of study.
  • Identify a weakness, gap, or unanswered questions for each one of the concepts.

Assignment 5.1: Annotations

Select a journal article which can be used to support your upcoming assignment. Read this article critically and write a 150-word annotation of it (using graphic organizer).

  1. Choose the article. Write the article’s reference.

  2. Summarize the key information. You should include a summary of the research question, methods used in the study, the main arguments, and conclusion of the article. Identifying the main arguments is different from simply stating the topic.

  3. Evaluate the article. Use the guiding questions in Step 3 to help you think critically about the source article.

Assignment 5.2: Synthesis Paragraph

Write a synthesis paragraph integrating ideas or information from two to three sources. You can use a research question that you developed for Unit 4 or one of your other recent courses. You may use sources that you already have access to or find new articles from databases like One Search or Google Scholar. Read critically before you complete the table below:

Assignment 5.3: Summary Paragraph

Using the reading and notetaking strategies discussed, write a 150-word summary of a research article (any article, including the article you found in Unit 4)

To check your understanding, write a short summary of the research. This will also help if you are going to write about the paper later in an essay, dissertation, thesis, or literature review.

Use the following questions as prompts:

  1. What is the research investigating?
  2. Why did the researchers investigate this?
  3. What was found?
  4. Are the findings unusual or do they support other research in the field?
  5. What are the implications of the results?
  6. What experiments could be carried out to answer any further questions?

Submit your research article summary in correct format (APA, MLA, ect.).

Read the example below of a marketing plan and answer the following questions. To ensure your answers are clear, please use complete sentences and avoid copy/paste method. Paraphrase and summarize the information.

  1. Does the paper follow the same outline as Figure 1?

  • What is the difference?

  1. How does this paper start, i.e., what is the first part of this marketing plan?

Introduction and Objectives:

Background

Company A is a family-owned fishing camp located 15 minutes east of K. City, Ontario on Lake A. This location provides them the opportunity to offer several services such as weekly cabin rentals, a fully licenced restaurant, guided fishing and hunting trips, and a full service marina. Company A has been operating for over forty years since being founded in 1971. Since the beginning the Company A have been forming life long friendships with their guests and the camp now has four generations of loyal clientele. Along with returning guests every year Company A also welcomes new guests, and hosts various events, such as weddings, fundraisers, and conferences throughout the year.

Company A has a strong dedication to customer service, which has helped them grow their client base over the years. This commitment is reflected in their mission statement:

“Our mission is to provide our guests with an unforgettable experience. We do this by building and maintaining personal relationships with our guests and customers while delivering outstanding customer service and offering exceptional amenities all at one of the most pristine locations on Lake A.”

Company A works hard to offer an unforgettable experience to all its guests and hopes that they return for many years to enjoy the lifestyle that the Company A have built their business around.
